The project is divided into three phases:

  • Phase I: inventory of obsolete pesticide stocks in Mozambique;
  • Phase II: development of a strategy to repack, collect and store safely obsolete pesticides and prevent future accumulation;
  • Phase III: the environmental friendly disposal of the identified and repacked obsolete stocks.

The current implementation of Phase II aims at:

  • Component A: Reviewing the national strategy for the management of pesticides and promoting the rational and safe use of pesticides in Mozambique;
  • Component B: Repacking and centralizing obsolete pesticides stocks and contaminated soils recently identified (around 600 tonnes) prior to their shipment and final disposal at a licensed facility;

The project is supervised by a National Steering Committee chaired by the Ministry of Environment and composed by the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Finance and Work together with FAO, the Embassy of Japan and key partners of the civil society and the private sector.
